Participatory Action Research Methods
| Aim |
Develop and strengthen participants’ capacity to plan, design and apply the Participatory Action Research (PAR) cycle and techniques in the study of health, illness and health services within a community development context. |
| Summary |
PAR research requires the active collaboration of researcher and community, and emphasizes co-learning as a primary aspect of the research process. In this research workshop participants will develop the PAR skills needed to gain insight into the causes of health, illness or health service problems from a community perspective. |
| Participant outcomes |
By the end of the workshop participants will have the skills and knowledge to:
- Apply key PAR techniques that involve programme participants or beneficiaries throughout the research process from needs assessment, identification of problems, testing of new interventions and evaluation of the outcome.
- Apply the PAR systematic cyclical method of planning, taking action, observing and evaluating (including self-evaluation).
- Critically reflect on the PAR process in preparation for planning of the next cycle.
- Develop PAR techniques (e.g. mapping, modelling, transect walks; prioritization).
- Develop a PAR analysis plan
- Begin the process of analysis and interpretation
- Describe various methods to disseminate PAR results.
